Attendance and Student Absence
At Medina Primary School, we believe every school day counts toward building your child’s confidence, friendships, and future. Being in school regularly helps children settle into supportive routines, build lasting relationships, and take full advantage of everything our school family has to offer—from classroom lessons to trips and extracurricular clubs.
We know that parenting can be challenging, and every family experiences tough moments. We want to work together with you to support your child’s attendance and wellbeing, ensuring they never miss out on their learning journey.
Why Regular Attendance Matters
When children miss school, it creates gaps in their learning and social connections that can be hard to bridge.
-
The Impact of 90% Attendance: A child with 90% attendance misses the equivalent of half a day of school every single week. Over their school life, that adds up to 209 missed days—more than an entire academic year of learning.
-
Persistent Absence: A pupil whose attendance falls to 90% or below is classified as a Persistent Absentee. If attendance falls to 50% or below, it is classed as Severe Absence.
-
Long-Term Habits: Establishing positive attendance habits early sets children up for success throughout their education and into adult life.

Understanding Authorised and Unauthorised Absence
By law, any absence during term time must be approved by the Headteacher.
-
Authorised Absence: Absence can only be approved in exceptional circumstances, or for genuine illness and religious observance, at the Headteacher’s discretion.
-
Unauthorised Absence: Any absence not approved by the Headteacher is classified as unauthorised and is monitored closely by Portsmouth City Council.
Penalty Notices & Legal Requirements
To support consistent attendance across the city, Portsmouth City Council's School Attendance Team can issue Penalty Notices for unauthorised absences (including term-time holidays, persistent lateness after the register closes, or 10 or more unauthorised sessions within a 10-week rolling period).
-
First Offence: £80 per parent, per child, if paid within 21 days (increasing to £160 if paid within 28 days).
-
Second Offence (within 3 years): £160 per parent, per child, payable within 28 days.
-
Unpaid fines may result in legal prosecution by the Local Authority.
