British Values

At Medina Primary School, we wholeheartedly embrace our duty to actively promote fundamental British values: Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, and Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs.

These principles are seamlessly woven into our school ethos, our curriculum, and our core Christian and community values. We aim to nurture fully rounded, empathetic young citizens who appreciate diversity, treat others with respect, and leave Medina fully prepared for life in modern Britain.

Democracy

Democracy is actively lived and experienced by our pupils every day.

  • Pupil Leadership & Elections: Our School Council and House Captains are elected through an authentic democratic process. Candidates deliver speeches, and pupils vote via secret ballots using real ballot boxes.

  • Pupil Voice: Pupil Governors meet regularly to share peer feedback, oversee sub-teams monitoring school life, and consult directly with School Governors to drive real improvements—from playground equipment to environmental projects.

  • Active Sub-Teams: Children drive progress across Medina by joining active teams like our Pupil Eco-Warriors, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, and Worship Team.

  • Curriculum & Community Action: Pupils nominate local and national charities to support and actively contribute their ideas during subject review sessions to help shape our curriculum.

The Rule of Law

We teach children that rules and laws protect us, keep our school community safe, and ensure fairness.

  • School Rules & Expectations: Our clear expectations, including our School Rules, help build an ordered, positive learning environment where everyone can thrive.

  • Understanding Consequences: Pupils learn the reasons behind laws, the responsibilities they carry, and the consequences of choices through assemblies, reflection sessions, and restorative discussions.

  • Community Links: We invite emergency services—including local police officers and fire crews—into school to help pupils understand law enforcement and community safety.

  • Rules Across the Curriculum: Children explore rules in Religious Education (learning religious laws and guidelines) and through Fair Play in PE and sports events.

Individual Liberty

At Medina Primary School, we empower pupils to make safe, informed, and respectful choices within a supportive environment.

  • Making Choices: Children are given the freedom to make independent choices, whether selecting extracurricular clubs, choosing how to present their learning, or deciding which play activities to engage in at lunchtime.

  • Rights & Responsibilities: Pupils learn to exercise their rights and personal freedoms safely. Through our myHappymind program, they develop personal resilience, self-worth, and emotional strength.

  • Online Safety: We teach explicit digital citizenship, empowering pupils with rules like STOP, BLOCK, TELL to navigate online spaces confidently and safely.

Mutual Respect & Tolerance

Respect is at the heart of everything we do at Medina Primary School. We teach our pupils to celebrate diversity and stand against prejudice of any form.

  • Celebrating Diversity: We embrace the rich cultures, traditions, and faiths within our school and wider community. We celebrate events like Eid, Chinese New Year, Harvest, Diwali, Christmas, and Easter together as a whole school.

  • Peer Support & Inclusion: Programmes like our Year 6 Prefects and Young Interpreters ensure new pupils and those learning English as an additional language feel warmly welcomed, valued, and included.

  • RE & Personal Development: Religious Education lessons explore major world faiths, encouraging deep appreciation, thoughtful discussion, and respectful curiosity.

  • Challenging Extremist Views: In line with our safeguarding duties, we actively challenge any opinions, language, or behaviour contrary to fundamental British values or human rights.
